WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Conaway
“Studying at Santa Cruz gives you the opportunity to work with some of the best instruments and the best people in science.”

“One of the things I like about the Environmental Toxicology department is that you don't really have to be a specific major in order to do research here. I came to Santa Cruz with a master's degree in Geology, but found myself branching off into biogeochemistry, chemical oceanography, and atmospheric chemistry—from the impacts of mercury and gold mining on toxic mercury concentrations downstream, to air-water interactions of dissolved gasses as that mercury escapes to the atmosphere.

The resources of the department also include those of other departments at Santa Cruz, such as Ocean Sciences, and also nearby universities and laboratories. The result is that studying at Santa Cruz gives you the opportunity to work with some of the best instruments and the best people in science. In addition to the many professors and researchers at Santa Cruz, I was also able to work extensively with a micobiologist and plankton researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, a pollen researcher at UC Berkeley, and oceanographers at Moss Landing Marine Lab.

The combination of interdisciplinary training and available scientific resources made it so that I was never at a loss for finding something interesting to study. The department has all the benefits of a truly interdisciplinary program.” - Christopher Conaway, WIGS Laboratory, ETOX

J.R. Flanders

“I chose the Department of Environmental Toxicology because it offered a supportive and flexible academic environment. As a re-entry student, I was looking for a program that viewed my experience working in industry as a benefit. The ETOX department, and Dr. Flegal in particular, was extremely positive about having re-entry students in his lab and in the department, which made the decision to come to UCSC much easier. The size and the diversity of department offers a surprisingly flexible academic environment. The interdisciplinary nature of the department, and the strong relationships with other departments allowed me to get the training that I needed to pursue an interdisciplinary collaboration.” - J.R. Flanders, Yildiz Lab, ETOX
